I ran out of ice when the AC unit broke.

Two weeks ago, we had a short span of time when the temperatures were in the nineties.

  • It only lasted three days, but the days leading up to it were in the sixties, and it was going back down into the upper sixties and lower seventies.

My husband turned on the air conditioning, knowing we would soon need it all the time. We didn’t think about the fact we hadn’t had the air conditioning unit serviced, and couldn’t find paperwork to know if we had it done the previous year. Two days into the three-day heat wave, the air conditioner quit working. We had to call the HVAC to have it fixed, but no one was available. The short heat wave had other air conditioner owners in the same boat we were in. My husband told me about a swamp cooler his grandpa used when he was a kid. They would put a bowl of ice in front of the fan. The fan would blow over the ice and cool the air. It sounded like something that would work temporarily, but we still needed to get the air conditioning unit fixed. Surprisingly, the fan and ice worked well to cool down parts of the house, but we ran out of ice very quickly. I made sure we had the HVAC company coming to the house to fix the air conditioning unit, then sat down to enjoy television. We only had a couple more hours until the temperatures cooled down and there was no end in sight for when the heat would come back again. I still wished we had the air conditioning unit repaired last year. We may not be out of ice right now.
