I remembered asking my dad if he would come to my sixth-grade career day. I thought it was silly to have a career day when you were in sixth grade. We were too old to care about the jobs our parents did, but too young to worry about getting a job. I was glad my dad didn’t show up, because this was proving to be a lame and embarrassing day for everyone. All I could think about was that we were missing lunch. My friends were upset because everyone was bored. An hour later, the teacher said we had one last person who would come in to talk to us. I was writing in my book and reading a little until I heard the voice. He introduced himself and said he was an HVAC technician on a ship. I felt tears in my eyes, because I hadn’t seen my brother in over a year. I got up and ran to him and didn’t want to let go. He had tears in his eyes as he pulled up a desk so I could be near him. He told the class about being an HVAC technician in the Navy. He said that as an HVAC technician, he was responsible for good air quality on the ship.
